Why Playing Sudoku Every Day Might Actually Be Holding You Back

There's a certain pride that comes with a daily puzzle streak. You open the app, crack your knuckles, and work through another grid before your morning coffee gets cold. You're consistent. You're dedicated. You're doing everything right.
Except, maybe you're not.
Here's a counterintuitive truth that competitive solvers and cognitive researchers have quietly known for a while: doing more of the same thing—even something as mentally engaging as sudoku—can stall your growth. In some cases, it can actually make you worse. Not because puzzles stop working, but because your brain gets a little too comfortable with them.
The Comfort Zone Has a Dark Side
Cognitive scientists call it automaticity—the process by which repeated behaviors become so ingrained that the brain starts running them on autopilot. It's the same reason you can drive a familiar route and arrive home with almost no memory of the trip. Your brain identified the pattern, filed it away, and stopped paying full attention.
The same thing happens with puzzles. When you solve the same difficulty level day after day, your brain stops treating it as a genuine challenge. Instead of building new neural pathways, it's just reusing old ones. The activity still feels productive—and it's certainly not bad for you—but the cognitive payoff shrinks significantly over time.
Dr. Robert Bjork, a memory and learning researcher at UCLA, has studied what he calls "desirable difficulties"—the idea that learning is actually deepened when the process is slightly harder and less predictable. When everything is familiar and comfortable, the brain coasts. When it's pushed into new territory, it grows.
Sudoku, for all its brilliance as a mental workout, is not immune to this principle.
When Your Solve Times Stop Improving
Talk to anyone who's been seriously into sudoku for more than a year, and you'll hear a version of the same story. The early months are exciting—times drop, strategies click, harder grids start feeling manageable. Then, somewhere around the six-to-twelve-month mark, progress flatlines.
Marcus, a competitive solver from Austin, Texas, described it this way: "I was doing two or three puzzles a day, every day, for almost eight months. I thought I was getting better. But when I timed myself against puzzles I'd done six months earlier, my times were almost identical. I hadn't improved at all."
What Marcus experienced is sometimes called a performance plateau, and it's remarkably common among dedicated puzzle players. The frustrating part is that it doesn't feel like stagnation from the inside. You're still solving. You're still finishing. The feedback loop that tells your brain "you did the thing" keeps firing—even when genuine skill development has stopped.
In some documented cases, solvers who stick rigidly to one difficulty level actually slow down on harder puzzles they used to be able to handle. Cognitive flexibility, it turns out, requires regular practice to maintain. If you're not using it, you start losing it.
The Science of Skill Stagnation
Researchers who study skill acquisition across domains—from chess to music to athletics—have identified a consistent pattern. Early gains come quickly because the learner is constantly encountering new problems. But as the learner improves, the gap between their current skill level and the challenges they're facing narrows. Eventually, the challenges aren't really challenges anymore.
This is where intentional variation becomes critical.
A 2020 study published in Psychological Science found that participants who practiced tasks with variable difficulty showed significantly greater long-term skill retention than those who practiced at a consistent level—even when the consistent-level group logged more total practice time. In other words, quality of challenge matters more than quantity of repetition.
For sudoku players, this translates directly: grinding through twenty medium puzzles a week is almost certainly less effective than mixing in a handful of expert-level grids, some speed-solving sessions, and even entirely different puzzle formats.
How to Tell If You're Stuck
Before you overhaul your entire puzzle routine, it's worth figuring out whether you've actually plateaued. Here are a few honest questions to ask yourself:
- Have your solve times stopped dropping? If your average hasn't improved in two or three months, that's a signal.
- Do harder puzzles feel harder than they used to? If you've stepped up to a more difficult level recently and struggled more than expected, your flexibility may have narrowed.
- Are you solving on autopilot? If you're finishing puzzles while also watching TV or half-reading your phone, your brain probably isn't working very hard.
- Do you always gravitate to the same difficulty? If the answer is yes, you've likely built a very comfortable—and very limiting—habit.
Shaking Up Your Routine Without Starting Over
The good news is that you don't need to abandon everything you've built. A few targeted adjustments can reignite genuine cognitive growth without making your puzzle time feel like a chore.
Introduce difficulty spikes. Once or twice a week, attempt a puzzle that's genuinely beyond your comfort zone. You don't have to finish it quickly—or even at all. The struggle itself is the point. Your brain is working harder during those stuck moments than it ever does during a smooth solve.
Try timed sessions. Speed-solving a medium puzzle is a fundamentally different mental experience than leisurely working through a hard one. Both are valuable, and alternating between them trains different aspects of your logical reasoning.
Branch out to related formats. Killer sudoku, where numbers in cages must add up to specific totals, forces you to use arithmetic alongside logic. Irregular sudoku—sometimes called Squiggly—breaks the standard box structure and forces your spatial reasoning to adapt. Even a few sessions with these variants can loosen up thinking patterns that have gotten rigid.
Take a short break. Counterintuitively, a two-or-three-day break from puzzles can actually improve performance when you return. Rest allows consolidation of existing skills, and coming back fresh often reveals capabilities that constant grinding was masking.
The Bigger Picture
None of this means your daily sudoku habit is wasted. Consistency still matters. The habit of showing up—of keeping your mind engaged with logic and pattern recognition—is genuinely valuable, especially over the long term. But there's a difference between maintaining mental fitness and actively building it.
If your goal is simply to enjoy puzzles and keep your mind sharp in a general sense, your current routine is probably just fine. But if you want to keep growing—to feel that satisfying click of real improvement—you have to be willing to make things uncomfortable again.
The best puzzle players aren't the ones who solve the most grids. They're the ones who keep finding ways to surprise their own brains. Start there, and the plateau won't stand a chance.
