Apply that to your puzzle practice and the implication is pretty clear: the solver who does three focused 20-minute sessions across a week, then takes a day completely off, is likely building more genuine problem-solving capacity than the one grinding through an hour every single morning without variation.

How to Rebalance Your Puzzle Practice

None of this means you should put down the grid and walk away forever. It means being a little more intentional about how you engage with it.

Try capping your daily sessions at 30 to 45 minutes. Set a timer if you have to. When it goes off, actually stop — even if you're mid-puzzle. Your brain will keep working on it in the background, and you'll likely find the solution faster when you come back.

Mix in a different puzzle type once or twice a week. Crosswords, logic grid puzzles, math riddles, even a game of chess — anything that forces your brain to operate under a different set of rules. The contrast is the point.

Build in at least one full rest day per week. No puzzles, no brain teasers, no "just one quick one before bed." Let your brain consolidate, recover, and come back hungry.

Pay attention to how you feel after a session. If you're finishing puzzles and feeling sharp and satisfied, that's a good sign. If you're finishing them and feeling dull, irritable, or mentally sluggish, that's your brain telling you something.

The Real Goal Here
